For Clinics

Supporting international doctors in practice
International doctors play an essential role in supporting healthcare delivery across Aotearoa New Zealand. At the same time, transitioning into a new healthcare system requires thoughtful integration into the clinical team and the wider practice environment.

Clinics invest significant time supporting international doctors as they settle into their new roles. This includes introducing local systems and workflows, guiding doctors through professional expectations, and providing supervision and local induction within the practice.

The Learning Hub has been developed to support this process.

Through structured learning pathways, the platform introduces key aspects of the New Zealand health system, clinical frameworks and the cultural context of healthcare in Aotearoa. This background learning helps doctors build familiarity with the environment they are entering before and during their early months of practice.

This content has been designed in alignment with New Zealand regulatory standards, general practice expectations, cultural context, and the real-world challenges international doctors experience when transitioning into practice.

The following key areas have informed the content:
  • MCNZ – Good Medical Practice and standards of competence
  • RNZCGP – Curriculum and expectations of New Zealand general practice
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi and hauora Māori - Cultural safety and equity
  • Transition insights – common clinical and systems challenges observed in IMGs entering NZ practice

It is designed to complement the orientation, supervision and local induction provided within each clinic. By providing consistent foundational learning, the pathways help reduce some of the administrative and educational burden on practices while supporting doctors and teams during the transition period.

The objective is simple: helping international doctors feel more confident and supported as they settle into practice.

Stronger integration supports happier, more fulfilled doctors and teams, leading to better retention and stronger healthcare communities. Stronger teams support stronger communities.
